6. Reports:
Rep. Brad Witt- Update on District 31
Best turn-out in state for primary, of course the Sheriff’s levy helped bring the voters out. It is being used as the state model. Need to engage the public voice in the election process.
Issues: Health Care
Campaign Finance
Education
Energy – Coal based power plant; Columbia Co. has cutting edge technology;
Update on Dem. Platform—Pat Cunningham
Discussion on the pros and cons of the convention are outweighed by the need for a concise, positive message that is easily conveyed. Rosemary pointed out that it is important to listen to the negative responses in order to rethink the message. Sherri Conyers added that we don’t have to have all the answers. Rather we must consider the needs of labor, and understand the conflict in our county between protecting the environment and jobs.
Brad Witt suggested using the screen of sustainability (with the 3 vying segments: economic, environmental, and social) as a test of any new program including the LNG’s.
Fundraising – Karen Greeney. We all agreed with Karen’s recommendation to raffle our Christmas items at the county fair. Pat C is tracking down a source of Buttons/Bumper Stickers for sale. We can look at making buttons as well, but this a very difficult process. Buying is our first option. As this will be self-funding we did not vote on a dollar amount to send.
We agreed to order t-shirts (and hats) with our Col Co Dem logo from a local supplier. The plan is, we each buy our own, and wear them at our local events. Please contact Pat C (patrickcunningham@lowergorgeousnews.com ) by July 10th with your size if interested. The more we order, the more we save.
6. New Business –
A Strategic discussion of our Central Committee;
With so much planned in July our next meeting will be held the last Tues. in Aug, (Aug 29), in Scappoose, specific location TBD.
Our next meeting will be a reorganization meeting – elect new board members, appoint new precinct people.
We will also use the meeting to discuss our Central Committee: our goals, our mission, what we plan to achieve, including the formation of committees to get us there.
B. Brad’s forums and walking the neighborhoods continues - PLEASE PLAN TO ATTEND TO SHOW SUPPORT
