Festival and Parade coverage

We supported events in Clatskanie, Rainier, Vernonia, St Helens and Salem with Scappoose yet to come.

Thank you to everyone who volunteered, especially those who took the lead in their local events; Roger W, Gayle L, Pat C,  Rosemary L, Donna N and Julane G.

Update from Clatsop County salmon feed/Congressional District 1 (CD1) meeting

Aug 19 was the annual Clatsop county salmon feed.  At that event Larry Taylor, their chair, announced the opening of a campaign office in Astoria.  Columbia County is invited to share those facilities.

The CD1 meeting was held at that event.  We discussed the potential dismantling of the CDs and the distribution of their balance to Columbia and Clatsop county efforts.  As an update, the state party has decided to not pursue this idea, so the distribution of funds will not occur.

Volunteer database

Steve Packer from Washington County has been working with the state to provide a volunteer database, seeded by people who volunteered via the DPO site during the Kerry campaign.  Columbia County can partner with Clatsop County and share access at the cost of $81/year.  We will need to vote on this at our Sept meeting.

Elections/Appointments

We welcomed the new PCPs who attended the meeting.  Jolene distributed “PCP handbooks” designed by the DPO.  Karen Greeney added the Columbia County specific content.  Thank you Karen.

We completed our reorganization with the election of our new executive board;

Jolene Jonas as chair,

Roger Wuollet as vice chair,

Donna Nyberg as secretary,

Karen Ladd as treasurer

We appointed previous precinct persons who forgot to file for the March elections

Pat Zimmerman and Paul Dinu for Scappoose East (37),

Earl Fisher for Clatskanie 1,

Gary Heide for St Helens 9

We appointed two new PCPs

Ryan Svenson for Scappoose 4

Thelma Bonar for Warren South

We elected delegates as follows:

At the state level, delegates will be Jolene J and Roger W, with Pat C and Ryan S as alternates

For CD1, delegates will be Donna N and Karen G, with Jolene J and Josette H as alternates

The following committees were formed.  Each committee lead will manage meetings with report outs at our monthly CCDCC meetings:

Finance – Karen L as lead with Nancy F and Gary H assisting

Publicity/Messaging – Jamie M, Tamara M and Pat C will co-lead.  Pat Z will assist with editing

Legislative – Craig F will lead with Josette and Ryan assisting

Recruitment – Julane G will lead with Gayle L, Bill B and Karen G assisting

Fund Raising still needs a lead

Mission/Charter Discussion

We talked about our group.  What do we want to achieve and how.

The following goals were agreed on:

1 - Promote our candidates – this includes GOTV, DTD, phone banking, donations

Rita mentioned she needs and appreciates our support, whether it be DTD or phone banking.  She sees our group as valuable support.  Donna and Jolene mentioned Brad Witt would agree.

The state party has a GOTV plan for 2006.  We will be discussing our portion of that plan at our next meeting.

2- Grow our young democrats  - we discussed our inability to attract younger voters.  Since our county has no college, we loose a lot of potential activists as they move away.  Julane’s recruitment committee will make this one of their focus areas.

3 - Education – create a speakers bureau as a forum for debate

Several of us expressed interest in having more opportunity to discuss issues important to us, to improve our ability to discuss them as we DTD, phone bank…

Mike S and Rosemary distributed a list of topics we could consider:

Ryan volunteered to coordinate speaker forums at Scappoose High School.  He will contact Trevor Palin to assist.

4 - Grow our base, both in PCPs and volunteers

All agree it is critical to grow our voice.  Julane’s recruitment effort will focus on this.

GOTV (Get out the Vote)

The state party has a plan for Nov, 2006.  We will be organizing phone banks to begin our calls in Oct.  We’ll discuss the details in the Sept meeting.

The next meeting will be on Sept 26, location St Helens TBD
